چکیده

A variety of obsidian from Glass Buttes, Oregon, known as “fi re” obsidian and named for thin layers showing various colors, was investigated with fi eld-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy, electron back-scatter diffraction, and optical spectroscopy methods. Our study reveals that the thin layers mainly consist of concentrated nanometric crystals of magnetite. The thin layers, which have a thickness of 300 to 700 nm, give rise to brilliant colors in refl ection. The color is caused by thin-fi lm optical interference, in which the thin layers have a higher calculated index of refraction (1.496 < n < 1.519) than that of the host glass (n = 1.481).

Nanomineralogy of gemstones: From genesis to discovery

Nanomineralogy is the study of Earth and planetary materials at nanoscales, focused on characterizing nanofeatures (like inclusions, exsolution, zonation, coatings, pores) in minerals and rocks, and revealing nanominerals and nanoparticles [1]. With advanced high-resolution analytical scanning electron microscope, we are now capable to characterize solid materials easier and faster down to nano...

Obsidian artifacts is frequently used materials in prehistory and found widely in archaeological sites. Provenance studies of obsidian has been an issue of intense research and debate between archaeologists and geologists. Since different provenance studies has been carried out from 1960s up to 2015 in Anatolia and Caucasus but obsidian studies in Iran is in very early stage and consider as ter...

Long distance trinket trade: Early Bronze Age obsidian from the Negev

The discovery of three small obsidian flakes at the Camel Site in the central Negev, Israel, constitutes the first discovery of obsidian in Early Bronze Age contexts in the Negev and Sinai. Obsidian hydration analysis and X-ray microprobe analysis confirm the association of the artifacts with the site and the period, and indicate origins in Eastern Anatolia, in significant contrast to the exclu...

Volcanic glass under fire – a comparison of three complementary analytical methods

The two obsidian sources from the island of Melos (Greece), Agia Nychia and Demenegakion, are chemically characterized by three complementary analytical techniques. Ion beam analysis (IBA) comprising particle induced X-ray emission and particle induced gamma-ray emission, neutron activation analysis (NAA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is applied to ...
